The United States formally kept its neutrality until the moment when the Japanese attacked America at Pearl Harbor. The attack prompted President Franklin Roosevelt to freeze all Japanese assets in the United States. Despite this, Japan decided that it would go to war with the United States.
The United States was involved in the war for several years. It had a large industrial base and a large population. It also had a trade embargo against Japan. It protected British shipping from German U-Boat attacks. In addition, the US had a lend-lease policy with the UK. It supplied arms to Britain under the ‘Lend-Lease’ agreement. It was considered a major contributor to the war.
Germany and Italy had aggressive foreign policies. They aimed to maximize their economic performance and national security. In addition, they coerced the recruitment of civilians as soldiers, enslaved enemy POWs, and engaged in numerous genocides.
The Soviet Union and Japan were at peace until the war. They had been unable to resolve their differences at the Versailles Conference. They had also expressed their resentment towards Western Europe during the Versailles negotiations. However, they were not willing to stop fighting China.
The Axis powers were allies of Germany and Italy. They occupied large parts of Eastern Europe. They hoped to expand their empire and take control of Britain and Russia. In addition, they fought over shipping lanes to Dutch East Indies.
The Axis powers enslaved the enemy POWs. They had anti-Semitic ideologies. They also had aggressive domestic policies. In addition, the Nazis wanted to establish hegemony over the “Aryan”/”Nordic” master race. They also wanted to eliminate Bolshevism.
The Nanking Massacre was a brutal killing of around 40,000 to 300,000 civilians. This was the worst atrocity of the World War II era. It occurred during the Sino-Japanese War. It was a result of Japan’s aggression against China.
The Soviet Union remained neutral, but it was not at peace. It fought under General Georgy Zhukov. It also negotiated a treaty with Germany. This treaty included a secret clause that would divide Poland.
After the end of the first round of the Battle of France, few people believed that the war could continue. The Allied forces were able to defeat the Germans. However, the Nazis were unwilling to allow the Allies to take the last territorial claim. They believed that attacking civilians would force the British to surrender. The Allies responded to this by launching a massive bombing campaign. This led to a huge fear factor.
The war was a nightmare for the British. They had no ships to transport all the men they needed. It was not until June 1941 that they were able to ration butter and milk. They also rationed eggs, bacon, jam, and tea. They also rationed clothing, which was scarce due to the shortage of raw materials.
